Syngonium Podophyllum “Arrowhead Vine”

Arrowhead Vine, sometimes called Arrowhead Plant or Syngonium podophyllum “Arrow”, is a versatile and easy houseplant that can be kept as a compact pot plant or allowed to climb or trail as the plant matures.

When young the leaves are arrow-shaped and are borne on erect, sheathed stems. As the plant matures the stems acquire a climbing habit and the leaves develop ear-like lobes at the base. Many varieties are available, ranging in colour from medium or dark green to variegated types with lighter green, yellow or silvery-white zones along the length of the leaf veins.

Syngoniums are peculiar in that the leaves produced by mature specimens are different in shape from those produced by young plants. The latter give the species its common names, which fairly accurately describe the shape of the juvenile leaves.

Toxic to pets and humans if ingested. It contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that can cause oral irritation, drooling, difficulty swallowing and vomiting.

caring for your plant

Light

Medium to medium-high. Avoid direct sunlight.

Watering

The soil should be kept moist, but not wet. Regular misting with tepid water is beneficial to keep the foliage looking fresh and to deter spider mites.

Pruning

The plant can be kept trimmed to a preferred size and shape by cutting the plant back. This will encourage the stems to branch and slow down the development of its natural climbing habit. The plant can be trained around canes, moss poles, or allowed to hang down from a high place.

Feeding

A dilute fertilizer added to the water every time you water the plant will be beneficial.

pest & diseases

Generally pest free, but occasionally prone to two-spotted spider mites if the atmosphere is especially dry. When spotted, remove with a damp cloth or paper towel, or wash under a gentle shower (not too hot). Mealybugs may also occur. These can be removed by cleaning the plant with a damp cloth or paper towel.
